The Graduate Diploma in Teaching has been especially developed to enable people with degrees to enter the teaching profession. The University of Otago College of Education has an outstanding reputation for producing high quality teachers capable of working in a wide range of roles, and its graduate programmes build on the subject knowledge acquired in your degree studies.

Food and Technology are offered as specialist subjects in the school curriculum at intermediate (Years 7 and 8) and secondary (Year 9-13) levels. Therefore, to become a food, home economics, hospitality or technology teacher, you can either study the Graduate Diploma in Teaching - Primary Education, which may enable you to teach at intermediate school level; or the Graduate Diploma in Teaching - Secondary Education, aimed at intermediate and secondary school teaching. The Secondary Education programme also entitles you to apply for Teach NZ scholarships, which are aimed at addressing the nationwide shortage of technology teachers at secondary level. Plus you have the option of studying part-time or in Invercargill. However, the Graduate Diploma in Teaching - Primary Education also qualifies you as a classroom teacher in any primary school which may better suit your career ambitions. Please contact us to discuss the best option for you.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

To enter the Graduate Diploma of Teaching through the Capable Teachers pathway, you apply through Capable NZ, on the ‘How to Apply’ page. Through this process, you will submit an application to the University of Otago College of Education prior to embarking on your degree study. This will include determining your suitability as a teacher through appraising your background and referees’ reports and meeting you in an interview situation. If you are successful, you will gain provisional acceptance to the Graduate Diploma in Teaching.

As you near the completion of your degree, you will then confirm your place in the Graduate Diploma of Teaching programme for the following year. You will need to have completed your degree by the time you start your teaching studies.

To enter the Graduate Diploma in Teaching - Primary Education you will also need to complete EDUC 102 - Human Development or EDTX - Introduction to Human Development at the University of Otago. EDUC 102 is offered during Semester Two (July to October) of any year, and EDTX is a distance paper that can be completed flexibly.
