Assessment and application

Am I right for APL?

We have provided a self assessment tool as part of the application process. We ask the following questions so that you can assess whether you are right for the CAPABLE NZ, Assessment of Prior Learning (APL) process. If you feel you're right for APL after completing the following questions, click 'Apply' to set up an interview with a facilitator.

Pre application questions

  1. I have five or more years' experience in my field (through work, volunteer and leisure activities).

YES

Great!

Go to question 2.

NO

Sorry, but you don't have enough experience for our process. A standard educational pathway is still a great option:

Go to the Otago Polytechnic website.

  1. I have a range of other life experiences I can relate to the core of my occupational work.
  2. I understand my own strengths and weaknesses in my work role AND as a learner.
  3. I stay current with new ideas in my field through short courses, reading, training and development opportunities and internet searching.
  4. I take an active interest in my organisation’s aims and objectives.
  5. I have a keen interest in finding good solutions to problems.
  6. I am able to review my experience, knowledge and actions and learn from my reflections.

Mostly YES?

If your answers to questions 2-7 are mostly yes to all yes, the CAPABLE NZ process will be highly beneficial, both in terms of your experience of it and the formal qualifications you will gain.

Go to question 8.

Mostly NO?

If your answers to questions 2-7 are mostly no, this may not be for you. APL requires ongoing motivation. Check out OP's Careers Advisors.

Commitment Involved

The Capable NZ process is very flexible and can be customised to fit your work/life schedules but there is obviously still a time commitment and you need to carefully assess what you can fit in. This can be talked through with your assessor.

  1. I am reasonably disciplined and self directed, and work well with minimum supervision.
  2. I have the support of my employer to pursue further professional development.
  3. I am able and willing to dedicate time for self reflection and study.

Mostly YES?

If your answers to questions 2-7 and 8-11 are mostly yes to all yes, you are an ideal candidate for CAPABLE NZ.

Go to the enquiry form...

Mostly NO?

If your answers to questions 8-10 are mostly no, your chances of success are also lower.
