How it works - APL process

1. Is APL for me?

We assess against your body of experience from both work and life in general, so APL will be most useful to adults. Talk to us about our Self Assessment Tool.

2. Profiling

This step involves talking with you to work out a pathway to a qualification that
best suits your needs. It is completed by an experienced Capable NZ staff
member (a profiler), who may also consult with teaching or professional staff.

You can expect a conversation by phone or in person to discuss your work
experience, skills, knowledge and goals and any qualifications you already
hold. You may send your CV or an email that outlines the scope of your work.

During the conversation the profiler listens for:

  • the context and scope of your professional experience
  • the nature of qualification required
  • an indication of the possible qualification level

This information allows Capable NZ to work out:

  • whether the APL process (link) is likely to suit you
  • the qualification that best reflects your learning from experience
  • the scope and breadth of assessment

We let you know about this pathway and you also receive a quotation for the
cost of the process for you. If you accept the quotation, preparation for
assessment begins.
